PCOS to Pregnancy: Can you manipulate what gender your baby will be?

You know that question everyone asks as soon as they find out you're pregnant..."Are you hoping for a girl or boy?" Some people are honest and will tell you the truth. Some people will say "...as long as it's healthy" and some people generally mean it. With our son, both my husband and I were hoping for a boy. Of course we would have been thrilled with a girl, but if we could have picked, we wanted a boy first.

Did you know that there is a bit of science behind which gender your baby will be? You may have heard of the Chinese gender predictor that takes into consideration your age and your due date. It's not scientific. According to this calendar, my son should have been a girl. But according to the book, Taking Charge of your Fertility, there is actual science behind the timing of your intercourse with ovulation and which gender you will conceive. Here's the cliff notes:

The man determines what the sex of the baby will be. The sperm that makes girl babies tend to live longer, up to 3 days, but swim to the egg slower. The sperm that makes boy babies are fast swimmers, but don't live as long. So, if you want to have a girl, you'll want to have intercourse 3 days prior to ovulation and then not again. You don't want to risk those fast boy swimmers getting to the egg if you have intercourse the next day. For a boy, having intercourse closest to the time of ovulation is your best bet!

We actually tested this theory (sort of) at a gender reveal party for some friends a couple months ago. They conceived on their honeymoon so we were convinced it was a boy! I mean, after all, what else do you do on your honeymoon? :) Lo and behold it was a boy!

With our next baby, I would be happy with either a boy or a girl. Honestly, I could see us having a house full of boys and I would be totally thrilled with that! As much as I love little girls and I think it would be fun to have one, being the mom to a little boy is awesome! I love his obsession with trucks! I could spend all day watching the trucks go by outside.

Of course, please remember I am not a doctor or a scientist. This is not medical advice. You can not sue me if you don't conceive the gender you are hoping for! It's just something to think about.

I'm Jenny, the mama behind the blog Cloth Diaper Revival.   I'm a stay at home mom to Noah and a wife to Chas, the cloth diapering dad.  I used to be a 3rd grade teacher until I was blessed with the birth of my first child, Noah. I'm currently trying to conceive my second child while struggling with infertility due to PCOS. This series covers my journey and my experiences along the way.

I've heard of that. They call it the "Shettles Method" if I'm not mistaken, but I'm not sure how much I believe it. I'm pretty sure I conceived our daughter on my ovulation day :) Husband and I didn't time things at all, but we were active more days than not. There are whole websites devoted to gender swaying, though, which is crazy! Congrats on your precious little boy! I would have picked boy first, too, but I would be crazy not to be totally in love with the little girl we got!

I have heard that some in vitro clinics can spin seman in a centrofudge or the like and it separates the X from the Y sperms and you can pick.

with my first child, I was convinced it was a boy from the moment I realized I ovulated because we had a lot of sex that weekend (and I knew about the male sperm swimming faster, but dying quicker). This time I was convinced it was a girl because of the timing.
Baby #1: BOY
Baby #2: Expected any day, but supposed to be a GIRL according to ultrasound ;)
