Wolbybug Covers, What makes them different than the rest?

Wolbybug, what's that you ask? Well it's a cloth diaper brand distributed by Knickernappies and named after our son Colby. Wolbybug is a nickname of sorts and has a special meaning for our family and as a result it made perfect sense to name a new cloth diaper line after him.

So what are Wolbybug Diaper Covers?

They're a single layer TPU waterpoof diaper cover. Gentle leg elastic encased inside waterproof TPU prevents leaks, holds in the messiest of messes and is just tight enough.

Durable snaps provide adjustability for the waist and hip and also work great for babies with chunky thighs who need additional settings. A snap down rise allows mama to snap and unsnap should she need to use the same cloth diaper cover on mutliple children of different sizes. The snap down rise also makes Wolbybug an affordable option. No more having to buy the next size up, Wolbybug Covers fit from birth through potty training.

Interior front flap and elasticized back flap help keep the prefold or insert of your choice in place and help prevent bunching.
Wolbybug hasn't reinvented the wheel, errr...the diaper cover, but it has spiced things up a bit with it's durability and unique elasticized interior back flap.

Have you tried one yet? You should! They're available at Cloth Diaper Outlet!

Go Green with your New Years Resolutions!

Green Years Resolutions

As each year draws to a close, people often reflect on the things they did right, the things they didn't, and what can change for the new year.  I'm no different, but rather than vowing to lose weight or exercise more, I want to resolve to do things that can have a more lasting impact.  I call them my "Green Year's Resolutions".

Un-Paper Towels - For over two years, our family didn't buy a single roll of paper towels.  Instead, I had a tall stack of plain white terry cloth towels that we purchased at Costco.  They were used to clean up messes that paper towels are normally used for, like spills on the floor or stains in the carpet.  When they were dirty, they got washed.  When they were dry, then went into a big laundry bag just for un-paper towels (no folding that way!).  It worked great, but for some reason, when we moved a year ago, my husband bought a roll of paper towels.  When they ran out, we went to Costco and bought a bulk package of paper towels.  I still use the un-paper towels, but not nearly so often.  I want to get back to our reusables and quit buying paper!

Handkerchiefs - This is another reusable that we've tried in the past.  They never stuck with the grown ups because I couldn't find any soft enough.  My daughter loves cloth baby wipes and that's all she'll use if she has a cold, but hubby and I stick with good old Kleenex.  I'd like to drop that off my Costco list as well and find a really good soft hankie.  I'm willing to make them, I just have to find the right fabric.

Rechargeable Batteries - When our daughter was born 5 1/2 years ago, I quickly realized we either needed stock in Energizer, or we needed rechargeables.  For $50 on ebay, I bought a stash of batteries and a charger.  Over the years, we've added more batteries to our stash and I had to replace a charger, but we haven't bought a single disposable battery (except once at the zoo when I forgot extra batteries for our camera).  Now that we have two kids, we need more batteries and a second charger.  There are things we should ALWAYS have spare batteries for (like my daughter's nightlight).

Family Cloth - okay, I'm mentioning this one just so it's out there, but I admit right off that we won't make this switch.  I gave it a really good try a couple of years ago.  My hubby flat out refused to try it, despite me purposely running us out of toilet paper.  Instead, he ran to the store to use their bathroom and buy more toilet paper!  I was okay with it, but washing the wipes and stacking them was the straw that broke the laundress's back.  But, I think YOU should give it a try!!  Can you do 30 days?  7 days?  I'd love to hear how it turns out for your family!

So are you thinking of going a littler greener for the New Year?  Please tell us some of your possible new year's resolutions!

Confession: I'm a Cloth Diaper Snob, are you?

I swear the longer I use cloth diapers the more convicted I am that I am turning into a Fluff Snob

Definition: The Fluff Snob is known by her impeccable taste in cloth diapers. She finds herself drawn towards diapers that she feels are better than average. She may be drawn to a particular brand of diaper, style or even the kind of fibers that are used. Her loyalty to that diaper is steadfast and she will not bend or waver to enticing offers to use anything else.

My particular area of weakness is the fitted diaper. You know the kind that is usually made with fabric, and sometimes they’re hybrid like a cute Toyota Prius, and include a hidden layer within the diaper to add absorbency. They require a cover but if the diaper is made well and you live in a warmer climate it can be worn coverless to show off that cute tushy!

It never fails, I see a blog offering a fitted diaper giveaway or even an all-in-one (AIO) giveaway and I find myself compelled to enter. If I come across a pocket diaper giveaway, I turn my nose up at it and won’t enter. The crazy thing about this is that the majority of the diapers that I own are pocket diapers! In fact up until the birth of my second child the only experience I had with cloth diapers were pockets. Now, I’d rather use a prefold and cover than have to stuff a pocket diaper.

So that’s my Fluff Snobbery confession. What’s yours?

Comparison between GroVia and Flip! Check out their differences.

There are so many new diapers coming out...AIOs, OneSize, and now Hybrids--diapers that can be 100% cloth or a mix of cloth and disposable.  Flip and GroVia are two examples of hybrid diapers.  Both are diapering "systems" that can either be used with a cloth insert or a disposable insert.

Why choose hybrid diapers?  As my husband says, cloth diapering isn't a religion (though it can feel like it!).  Most families do choose to use disposables at least occasionally for vacation, daycare, etc.

When we had our daughter, I was strictly 100% cloth.  No disposable ever touched her bottom once we made the switch to cloth.  Even our wipes were cloth and we didn't own a single package of disposable wipes.  But with our son, I find myself relaxing about what diapers we use.  Colby had a non-diaper-related rash that required a special ointment.  The same weekend, we were heading out of town for a 3 day trip.  I pulled out a pack of Flip disposable inserts and thought...why not?  I should at least try them since I sell them.

That started our trial of Flip disposable inserts, GroVia disposable inserts, and even a pack of GroVia disposable wipes.  Here is my review.

Just looking at the packages you'll notice that GroVia disposables are meant for full-time use.  They come in packs of 50.  Flip disposables come in a pack of 18 and are advertised as an alternative diaper for vacations, etc.

GroVia insert, Flip insert
You'll notice the difference between the two inserts immediately.  Flip are an off-white natural color, long, no elastic, and no plastic.  GroVia are pure white, feature elastic at the leg and in a gusset, are a lot shorter, and are backed with a layer of plastic for waterproof protection.

GroVia insert inside GroVia cover, Flip insert inside Flip cover
GroVia inserts feature two spots of sticky tape to stick the diaper to the cover.  I found right away that you pretty much have to use this sticky tape.  Otherwise, because of the elastic, it bunches up and doesn't provide coverage.  The old GroBaby inserts, I heard, would stick fast to PUL products, meaning they couldn't be used with other covers like Thirsties.  I carry the new version of the GroVia inserts and I've used them now with every cover we own, including Thirsties.  The sticky tape is just the right amount of stick...it holds without sticking forever to the fabric.

Flip doesn't have any sticky tape or elastic.  You fold it under to the length you need, then lay into a cover.  Flip covers are easy because they feature a flap at each end for holding the insert.  But I've used these in all of our covers with no trouble.

The GroVia feel more like a disposable with the elastic and the plastic backing.  The Flip feel more natural.  Both claim to be compostable, but I don't think I would ever put GroVia in the compost pile.  The package says the elastic needs to be removed first as it may not break down.

Days: Both do great during the day or for naps.

Nights: I was never successful with GroVia overnight.  Since they have plastic backing, you can't lay another insert underneath for extra absorbency.  With the Flip inserts, I would put a hemp insert underneath to hold overnight.  Worked great every time.  I did try folding a second GroVia insert and placing inside the first for overnight use, but that didn't work either.  After about 5 nights of trying GroVia overnight, we gave up.  We had leaks every night, some worse than others.  Flip, however, kept our son dry every night, as long as we had a hemp insert for extra absorbency.

Poop:  GroVia does the best at containing runny breastfed baby poop.  The elastic generally keeps everything where it needs to be.  Since Flip inserts don't have elastic, the poop did escape the insert a few times but the cover did hold it in.  We never had an actual poop leak with either brand.  But I wash covers more often with Flip.

Price: Before shipping costs and not counting any discounts, the Flip inserts are $0.33 each.  GroVia inserts are $0.43 each.

Bottom line: I wouldn't use either one of these for full-time diapering.  Too much disposable to really be saving the planet, too expensive to be saving money.  After all, I'm a cloth mom!  But for vacations, times when you need to use diaper creams, Grandma's house, etc, these are both perfect choices.  I would use them both again, though I'd probably pick Flip first just because it seems more of a natural option and the package count is smaller.

Winner of (2) Mystery Diapers is...

Mama Cloth, All summed up!

Mama Cloth has to be one of my favorite things to write about and talk about. After cloth diapering and seeing all the cute little fluffy cloth diapers for baby, the mama could only help but wonder about cloth and reusable options for her needs as well.  After all, most mama cloth is made from the same materials as cloth diapers.

Some of the reasons that I use Mama Cloth for would be because of the fact that I feel they are cleaner, environmentally friendly and free of toxins, they do not get stuck to my personal areas because there's no adhesive, and they do not make you as hot as the disposables. Breathability is an important factor to consider for feminine hygiene and health.  Plus I really love that they do not sit out in our landfill waiting for decomposition like disposable menstrual products.

Mama cloth is so extremely easy to care for that it makes it really easy to switch. Once it
becomes soiled just simply rinse it out with cold water and then throw in with your normal laundry. It is really no different than washing your cotton undies. The only different thing that you may want to do is to lay it flat to dry. I found that using a dryer will cause it to bunch up, depending on the brand and style, and become uncomfortable.

Many feel that mama cloth is too nasty to bother with, but all in all I think it is just as natural as using cloth diapers. It is your body, not someone elses, and it is another way of being more eco-friendly and less wasteful.  Try it, I bet you'll fall in love with the ease of use and comfort of using Mama Cloth!

Cloth Diapers, What if you accidentally use the WRONG detergent?

If you read this detergent post, then you know what this is about...  Your first choice of detergent resulted in leaking, smelling, rash, or even all three.  Now what?

Thankfully the answer is pretty easy, though it can take some time: a routine maintenance called stripping.  The idea is to strip the detergent residue out of the fabric.  Successfully done, it will improve absorbency, reduce odors, and help your baby stay rash-free.

If you google "stripping cloth diapers" you'll find dozens of ways to do it.  Some are easy, some are unbelievably complicated.  Some methods void warranties.  Here are the three methods I recommend most often.  These methods are accepted by most of the major cloth diaper brands.

1. Hot Water - try this one first...it's easiest!  Simply wash diapers and inserts as usual, then rewash in hot water 2-3 times with no detergent.  During the agitation cycle (preferably hot water agitation), look inside your washer.  If there are any soap bubbles at all, run another hot wash.  Repeat until water is absolutely clear.

2. Oxyclean - either the Regular or the Baby version will work.  Wash diapers as usual first, then rewash in hot water with the amount of Oxyclean recommended on the label (usually 1 scoop).  Rinse 2-3 times until water runs very clear.

3. Dawn dishsoap - this one is overall the most effective, but takes the longest.  Use original blue Dawn.  Wash diapers first, the rewash in hot water with 2 tablespoons Dawn.  Then rinse and rinse until water is clear.  This can take a while to wash out all the Dawn bubbles.  It's extra bubbly since it's not made for washing clothes, but it works very well to strip out detergent residue.  If you have hot water rinse, that will be faster.  If you can't get them bubble-free in 2-3 washes, then I recommend going ahead and using them, but running 2-3 washes when you wash them again.  That way it breaks up the number of washes needed to get the water to run clear and you can use them in between.

Other popular methods include using RLR (little balls of detergent found at Cloth Diaper Outlet) or soaking with Rockin' Green.  I haven't personally tried these methods, but I've heard great things about them.  These methods are also not mentioned much by the manufacturers, but I don't think they would void any warranties.

Just one last note: if you use dryer sheets or fabric softener with your regular laundry, it can transfer residue from the machine to your diapers.  Use the same methods to strip out fabric softener residue.  Then I recommend using a scoop of Oxyclean once every week or two to prevent buildup from occurring again.

How and when to STRIP your Cloth Diapers.

If you use cloth diapers for any significant length of time, odds are, you are going to have to strip them at some point. Most of the time, diapers are stripped for one of the following reasons. The first reason is repelling; over time, diapers can lose absorbency and may even start leaking. The second reason is stink, most often, ammonia stink. The final reason diapers may need to be stripped is usually accidental, i.e. fabric softener was unintentionally added to a load of diapers or non CD-safe diaper rash cream was used. Basically, the need to strip cloth diapers is usually some form of build up causing problems. However, there are some cloth diaper users who preemptively strip every so often in order to prevent future issues.

Hot Water

The most basic of all the stripping techniques is simply using hot water. Diapers are run through repeated wash cycles with just hot water, no additives, until the water is clear. *Diapers should not be washed or stripped with water exceeding 150 degrees.  Please consult your diaper manufacturers warranties and care instructions before proceeding.

Dawn

Probably the most popular stripping method is to use regular blue Dawn dish soap. A couple of squirts in a hot water wash cycle, no detergent added, can be effective at removing build up. This usually causes lots of suds and takes several rinses for the water to be completely clear. In the past when I stripped with Dawn, I didn’t get many suds. I ended up applying Dawn to each diaper individually, rubbing them until they were sudsy, and then leaving them in a sink of hot water to soak overnight.

Bleach

Many people are skeptical to use bleach on cloth diapers, but actually, Cotton Babies recommends monthly bleach treatment of their products. Around ¼ cup of bleach is added to a full load of diapers with no detergent, and then rinsed until the water is clear. For me, this method produced many more suds than stripping with Dawn and took at least 5 rinses to completely rinse out.

RLR

RLR Laundry Treatment was suggested to me when none of the previous stripping methods had solved my ammonia problem. It can be ordered from several well known online cloth diaper retailers and is relatively inexpensive. Mine came in a packet that was added to the hot wash cycle with no detergent, and then the diapers were left to soak. And then, you guessed it, rinse, rinse, rinse, until the water is clear. This method can be very effective if build up is caused by mineral deposits from your water.

Brand Specific Funk Remover

Many cloth diaper and cloth diaper detergent manufacturers make a product that removes build up/ammonia/general stink. The application technique is generally the same as the methods already discussed. The product is added to a wash cycle, with or without detergent, depending on the instructions, and then rinsed out, often after a period of soaking.

BacOut

Stripping with BacOut is similar to stripping with any product, with the exception that most resources I found suggest soaking diapers in the washer with BacOut AFTER the diapers have already been washed and rinsed. So after a normal hot water, cold rinse cycle, refill the washer, add ¼-1/2 cup of BacOut, let soak for desired length of time, run the wash cycle, then rinse until the water is clear.

During a particularly nasty battle with ammonia stink, I used every stripping method listed above with the exception of BacOut. It can be trial and error to find the stripping method that works best for you, but most people have a favorite, tried and true method. What’s yours?
